Sarali Varisai

Sarali Varisais are meant for learning the swaras/ notes in an octave step-by-step. It is advisable to practice sarali varisais in minimum in 5 ragas (shankarabharanam, mayamalavagaula, kharaharapriya, thodi & kalyani) in 3 speeds (1st, 2nd & 3rd speeds).

Start with tempo 60 in 1st speed and after practicing all the 5 ragas, move to higher tempos in steps of 10 points (60, 70, 80,....120). This step-by-step approach helps to understand the fingering & timing well and also correct the mistakes then and there. After achieving tempo 120 in 1st speed, we can move to 2nd speed 60. In 2nd speed, we can move to higher tempos in steps of 5 points (60, 65, 70,......120). Then we can move to 3rd speed and practice tempos 60, 65 and 70 (and if possible 75 and 80). Those who learn vocal should put hand thalam throughout their practice, while instrument learners can practice hand thalam by singing one round in every tempo.

Jandai Varisai

Jandai Varisais have double notes in rolling patterns. We have to do many fingering changes/adjustments to manage these rolling patterns in different ragas. Like sarali varisais, jandai varisais should also be practiced in 3 speeds in 5 ragas.

Please note that for jandai varisai, we have to put every thalam 2 times.

Dhattu Varisai

In Dhattu Varisais swaras/notes will be moving in zigzag pattern. Fingering for dhattu varisai is same as jandai varisai. Dhattu varisais should also be practiced in 3 speeds in 5 ragas.

Mel Sthayi Varisai

Mel Sthayi Varisai (upper octave) Lessons are meant to practice the combination of middle and upper octaves. Like the previous lessons, this lesson should also be practiced in 5 ragas in 3 speeds. While crossing the Upper S' from the middle octave, we should use the thumb on S', and while coming down from the upper octave to middle octave, we should not forget to keep the middle finger on N.

Mandra Sthayi Varisai

Mandra Sthayi Varisai (lower octave) Lessons are meant to practice the combination of middle and lower octaves. Like the previous lessons, this lesson should also be practiced in 5 ragas in 3 speeds. While moving to the lower octave from middle octave, we should use the middle finger on lower 'n', and while returning to the middle octave from the lower octave, we should not forget to keep the thumb on S.
